Why is My Car Leaking Water?

Water leaking from under your car can be alarming, but it doesn’t usually indicate a serious issue. In fact, if your car is leaking water—and not a different automotive liquid—then it’s probably caused by condensation in the AC system leaking out via the exhaust pipe. So, how can Ridgewood drivers determine whether water is leaking from under a car? Our guide covers the basics.

Is Your Car Leaking Water, Or Something Else?

Sometimes it looks like your car is leaking water, but it’s actually leaking something else. Other translucent automotive liquids can appear to be clear when dripping onto the cement or blacktop underneath your vehicle. To find out if it is water leaking from under the car, place a clean sheet of paper under the leak. This way, you’ll be able to see if there’s any color to the liquid and then determine its identity:

  • Red – Transmission Fluid or Power Steering Fluid
  • Orange – Transmission Fluid or Radiator Coolant
  • Yellow – Radiator Coolant
  • Green – Antifreeze from Water Pump, Hoses, or Radiator
  • Blue – Windshield Wiper Fluid
  • Dark Brown – Brake Fluid or Older Engine Oil
  • Light Brown – Newer Engine Oil or Gear Lubricant
  • Pink – Power Steering Fluid or Transmission Fluid

If any of the above fluids are leaking from your vehicle, the level is likely to be too low. Be sure to visit a Jersey City-area service center so that a professional can take care of any reservoir leaks ASAP!

Why Is My Car Leaking Water?

The amount of water leaking from under your car and the area it’s leaking from can provide some clues about the cause. If your car is leaking water, it could be due to:

  • Condensation. A small amount of water leaking from the exhaust pipe is normal.
  • Blown Gasket. Large amounts of water leaking from under your car can be caused by a blown gasket and coolant burning along with the fuel. In this case, the leak is often accompanied by white smoke coming from the exhaust pipe.

If you use the paper test to determine that your car is leaking coolant, there are several possible causes. Blue or green liquid leaking near the front wheels is windshield wiper fluid. There are also several reasons why your car might be leaking windshield wiper fluid, but the most common cause is a cracked reservoir due to cold temperatures. If you’re not able to find the cause of the leak yourself, schedule Jaguar service in Paramus so that a technician can take a look!
